How to Prepare for Your First NDIS Planning Meeting
Your first NDIS planning meeting can feel overwhelming, but preparation makes all the difference. Here is what to know, what to bring, and what to expect.
How to Prepare for Your First NDIS Planning Meeting
Your first NDIS planning meeting is an important milestone. It is your opportunity to tell the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) about your disability, your life, and what supports you need to achieve your goals. Being well-prepared can make a significant difference to the outcome of your plan.
What to Bring
- Proof of identity (e.g. driver's licence, Medicare card)
- Medical reports or assessments related to your disability
- A list of your current supports and service providers
- A written list of your goals - both short-term and long-term
- Notes on your daily routines and challenges
- A support person (family member, carer, or support coordinator)
Think About Your Goals
The NDIS plan is built around your goals. Think about what is most important to you. Do you want to be more independent at home? Connect with the community? Learn new skills? Maintain your health? The more clearly you can articulate your goals, the better your plan will reflect them.
Ask for Help if You Need It
You do not have to attend your planning meeting alone. A support coordinator, Local Area Coordinator (LAC), family member, or advocate can attend with you and help you communicate your needs. At NARS, we are always happy to help you prepare - contact us if you would like guidance.
What Supports Can Be Funded Under Core Budget?
The Core Support budget is the most flexible part of your NDIS plan. It funds supports that help you with everyday life - and in many cases, you can move money between different Core Support categories based on your needs.
The Four Core Support Categories
At NARS, most of the supports we provide fall under the Core Support budget. This includes personal care, community nursing, household tasks, community participation, and transport. We can help you understand exactly which of your funded supports we can deliver.
If you have questions about your funding, contact us or visit the NDIS Resources page for official links and guidance.
